Assessment

  • What has changed?

The new National Curriculum became compulsory from September 2014. Alongside the new National Curriculum, it was decided by the Government that schools should develop their own model for assessing children in their school. We have adopted a model which has been worked on by the Herefordshire Teaching Alliance and is being used by many schools in Herefordshire. It enables us to track the progress that children make throughout their school life. It is based purely on Teacher Assessment.

  • How does it work?

Every child will be assessed in Reading, Writing and Maths. Teachers will highlight grids which have the objectives for each year group. Based on the percentage of objectives highlighted, they will then be awarded a stage

Each year group has three stages:

    •  Secure (More than 90%)
    •  Within (50% – 90%)
    •  Entering (Less than 50%)

National expectations are that children will end the year at the secure stage for their year group. As with the previous curriculum, children will follow objectives that are best suited to their individual ability.

Children that reach the secure stage will be challenged by developing their ability to apply their learning to a variety of contexts. The Government’s aim is that children’s learning is fully embedded in their own year group’s objectives.

  • How do I know which stage my child is working at?

Teachers will be providing you with the stage your child entered their current year group at Parents’ Evening. Due to the expectations of the new national curriculum being increased, you may notice that your child seems below their age related expectation. We fully expect this as we transfer children onto the new assessment model so please do not worry.

THERE IS NO CORRELATION BETWEEN THE OLD OBJECTIVES AND THE NEW ONES SO PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO COMPARE.

  • End of Key Stage

Year 2 and Year 6 are slightly different due to being end of key stage year groups. They have additional stages that the children can be awarded for Teacher assessment.
